Safety is Vital In My Job as Roofer

posted on 7 July 2011

Any uk roofing contractors will tell you that their first priority is safety. I can tell you that we do not take safety lightly at all in my own company. We are trained in every aspect of height safety and we use the latest fall arrest equipment for the jobs that require it. There's a whole different way of moving when you work at height. Your senses become heightened and your movements so much more deliberate. I can be tired on the ground and when I'm up on a roof, I'm wide awake, alert, ready for work - it's just the adrenalin doing its job. At height, we communicate in a much more direct way too of course. We can detect the slightest nuance in behaviour from another worker. Perhaps they're not feeling too well - it becomes obvious up there and we look out for each other when far from the ground.

Living With Litter: a Tale from the Edge of a City

posted on 18 May 2011

I won't mention my city, because it could be any city in the UK when I mention the problem. The problem is litter. The ground is covered in it - the streets, the playing fields, everywhere. Everybody seems to be littering too - even those who are supposedly of a more refined upbringing litter as well - I've seen them. I know why too - there's a sense of futility when you walk around a littered area - contributing to the mess seems less of a crime and so people get lazier. Occasionally the council come in and use one of those petrol pressure washers to work on particularly tough materials littering the ground - other than that, litter can be left there for weeks on end. Summer's particularly bad - hot days mean the litter creates a foul smell and that's when I really feel the need to get out of the city.
